Steve Dinneen

City AM

As editor of City AM’s quarterly luxury supplement The Magazine and Life & Style editor of City AM newspaper, Steve Dinneen brings intriguing, lively and distinctive features to his audience.

His long-read feature about nefarious actors using AI to generate fake articles was one of the first wave of stories exploring how this new technology is impacting journalism, and where it will go next. What began as a story about AI turned into something far more human – and far stranger – leading Steve on a trail from London to Nairobi and Chicago. One impressed reader described it as “like a spy novel”.

Other features show off Steve’s writing flair and range. For a piece on the future of ageing and the ticking timebomb of the UK’s ageing population, Steve checked in for a stay at a Chelsea-based retirement community. His tale of meeting a range of colourful characters, including a key figure from the Swinging Sixties, brings the human stories behind the statistics to life. Meanwhile, a piece exploring our love affair with spicy food sees him attempting to break a record for eating California Reaper chillies: part reportage, part memoir, part deep dive into the absurdly macho world of spicy food.

Judges’ comments: “Steve is a great example of what modern journalism should be: lively, imaginative and distinctive. His sense of enjoyment is palpable in the writing.”
