In his 25 years with Reach PLC, Gary Beckwith has demonstrated impressive range in designing a wide portfolio of newspapers, supplements and magazines.


His entries showcase his work on Newcastle Chronicle publications, which were produced following Newcastle United FC’s successful year in the Premier League and the Chronicle’s coverage of their Carabao Cup win. 


The front page of a special supplement reviewing Newcastle United’s 2024/25 season is a striking, clean layout in black and white (Newcastle’s colours), with poignant images of the club’s campaign superimposed inside a large profile image of manager Eddie Howe. 


A centre spread from the same supplement is cleverly designed in the style of a football sticker magazine, with images of the Newcastle squad supported with statistics from the season. The idea is that fans could pull out the spread to use as a keepsake poster. 


Gary’s design of the Chronicle’s front page on the date the team would be parading through Newcastle City Centre with the Carabao Cup perfectly celebrates this historic event, with iconic images from previous cup wins complementing a lively, vibrant image of the most recent victory.


Judges’ comments: “The designs tick all the boxes: cohesive… slick, exciting and inviting. Eye-catching designs marking a very successful season by Newcastle United.”
